It’s nice to know that most of the kids who went through the Catholic School system did so without the need of a lawyer. Proof that most of them may have even enjoyed the experience keeps popping up in the form of books and plays.
A new star currently peeping over the horizon comes in the form of a newly released book by Sophia Zufa, also a product of the parochial school system and the men (and women) in black. Her book, ‘Why God Has Gray Hair’ is based on her experiences in a Catholic school in the 1930’s, the years of the Depression.

Although times were hard, she looks back fondly on those years, recalling family and friends and how things really were. “I started jotting down some of the things we did as kids” she says “after getting together with a few of my old classmates.” She says the title of the book came from what her parents used to tell her and her brothers when they would get into trouble. “ ‘You would give the good Lord Himself gray hair’ they would tell us.”

Now 80 and a grandmother of three, this is the second book for Zufa, who also has translated two books for publication in English and recently completed a novel. She also writes a monthly humor column for a regional newspaper, The Senior Connection.
